Happy New Year to everyone! I was contacted last summer by a lovely journalist who wanted to come and interview me for the French magazine Pratique des Arts' watercolour special. I was happy to obligue and this is the result! One of my paintings features ont he cover and there is an article inside. The article is in French so I am not entirely sure what is being said! It shows some of my work and explains some of the techniques I use, I am very happy with it! I have been working on some watercolour batiks, a process of building layers of wax and paint in order to make your painting. The painting is finally revealed when you remove the wax, I love the effect. Both of these pieces are 12 x 12cm. Hope you like them.

Society of Women Artists 150th Celebratory Exhibition 2011

I am very pleased to have found out that my painting Covent Garden Sentinels II has been selected to take part in this years SWA exhibition. The Society of Women Artists 150th Celebratory Exhibition, will take place at The Mall Galleries, London, SW1, from 30 June to 9 July 2011. The exhibition will be opened at the private view on 30 June 2011 by the Society's Patron HRH Princess Michael of Kent.

Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours 2011 Exhibition

We attended the private view of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours 199th Exhibition 2011 private view yesterday. We had a great afternoon looking around and I was chuffed to see my work hanging in the main gallery :-) It was very busy and there was some beautiful work on show. I highly recommend a visit to the exhibit, it runs from 30 March - 10 April 2011 at the Mall Galleries, Pall Mall, London.

In light of the ongoing crisis in Japan a few artists have decided to band together to help raise funds for the Japanese People living in the areas effected by the recent earthquake and tsunami. I am joining with these other artists by auctioning two of my paintings with all proceeds going to the Japanese Red Cross.

Watercolour on Yupo

My latest paitning is a watercolour on Yupo, 30x30cm, "Covent Garden Sentinels 2". I am really loving painting on Yupo! However, this one turned into a nightmare because...... I work from left to right and as I worked across the "paper" the paint would not stick to the surface at all! I had completed the main model so really did not want to give up. I then realised that by resting my hand/wrist on the paper as I painted I had left grease marks all over it! I tried everything to get rid of the grease but to no avail - water/tissue, water/soap/tissue, alcohol, nail varnish remover, vinegar! I finished it in the end but it was hard work! Lesson learnt - when painting on Yupo always have your hand/wrist resting on some paper placed on the work!

Dealing with Rejection

I am going to apologise in advance, I really don’t like to moan but wondered how people felt about this and whether there is any advice on how to deal with rejection by jury! I recently entered two paintings (Summer I and Camden Lock I), probably some of my best work, into two big shows. Neither got in and obviously no feedback is provided as to why, apart from the rejection letters stating the high standard of entries this year etc, (which I expect all rejectees get) and encouraging me to enter again next year. Having CFS I always try to think positively - I have been rejected before and have just carried on but for some reason I feel really down about these latest ones. Both paintings took me about 70 hours each to paint when fatigue allows , fees are paid to enter, frames for large paintings are expensive and so is delivering the work etc, I also thought the paintings were OK. Money is tight as I am not at work at the moment and I felt (perhaps wrongly) my art could help me out a little financially. Feedback from jurors would be so useful in knowing where I am going wrong, if florals are out of favour it would be handy for to know! I am just wondering whether I should give up before I bankrupt myself in entering any more major shows and professionally framing paintings that will not be seen. Moan over, sorry!

Your painting will be on display in Quanhua Watercolour Art Gallery form 15th April to 31st October 2010." I am delighted - my first exhibition!!
